Diwali is just around the corner (Saturday to be precise). I am sharing some simple Diwali decoration ideas that will get you in the festive mood and change your home ambiance to create an enticing and welcoming space.
Significance of Diwali
Diwali, or Deepawali, the festival of lights, is one of the most popular festivals of India, if not the most. It symbolizes the spiritual “victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance”.
On Diwali day, Hindus light rows of diyas (oil lamps usually made from clay, with a cotton wick dipped in oil or ghee) around their houses, draw elaborate rangolis outside their homes, exchange gifts and sweets, and light fireworks. The Goddess of Wealth, Maha Laxmi, is also worshipped.

Diwali Celebrations in the USA
In the US, Indian festivals that fall on weekdays are celebrated on weekends by visiting temples or organizing a get-together to celebrate the occasion with friends. The actual day of the festival is business as usual, as it is not a holiday, and it is pretty difficult to get time from the daily grind to do anything special.
I miss home and all the pre-Diwali preparation and shopping with my mom!
But this is the life I chose. So, in an effort to keep the traditions alive and create beautiful memories for our future kids. My husband and I celebrate all the festivals at home, including Diwali, may not be in a grand manner as back home, but still sweet enough to add meaning to the day.
Diwali in our New Home
Every Diwali, I try to light diyas around the house and celebrate it with friends with a big feast. This year, Diwali is more special as it is our first Diwali in the new house and the last one as a family of 3. Next year, we are going to celebrate it with our little one
I want to make Diwali as exciting for our baby boy as it was for us when we were kids. One way to do it is by decorating the house and creating a festive ambiance. Here are a few ideas on how you can jazz up your home for Diwali.
Simple Diwali Decoration Ideas

1. Diwali Decoration Ideas for your Entrance
I repeated the same door decoration that I had done for our housewarming, featuring mango leaves toran and chrysanthemum garlands. I joined 2 garlands to increase the length and hung them on either side of the door.

I don’t own any Urli, so I DIY’d this centerpiece by arranging marigold and wisteria garlands on a copper plate and topping it with a Ganesh Diya. We gave these diyas as a return gift for our housewarming!

I kept the Rangoli simple by drawing multiple flowers around the centerpiece. If you’re wondering how I managed to draw such consistently looking flowers, here is the trick: use a stencil 🙂 The stencil and colors I used are from Ombox.
You can further enhance your Diwali Rangoli by combining it with clay diyas. I used tea light candles for the pictures, but on Diwali, I will be using oil to light the diyas.

2. Diwali Decoration Ideas for your Fireplace
The fireplace is the first thing you’ll notice when you enter our living room. Decorating a focal point of the room will elevate the whole space. I decked the mantel with gold votive holders, house plants, and a Diya banner. The marigold garlands and Swastik mat added an ethnic touch to the space..
The custom nameplate was a wedding gift from my husband’s colleagues. I get asked about it a lot on my IG. I found an Amazon seller who makes them. Click here to check it out.
I got the lanterns on sale from Hayneedle; they are sadly sold out. I linked similar options here.

3. Diwali Decorations for your Staircase
Give your staircase a grand and festive glow by wrapping it with faux marigold garlands.

3. Diwali Decorations Around the House
As a plant lover, this spot makes my heart happy whenever I look at it. I, of course, had to decorate it and make my plant babies feel included in our celebrations. I hung a strand of Marigold and Wisteria on every window using adhesive transparent hooks and amped it with curtain string lights.

The window sills are decorated with colorful Diya and battery tea lamps.

The flower mats came in the set with the Swastik mat. I am using the same votives as above, but in silver. The beautiful, similar Lotus diya in the center is also from Kula village.
